According to a report by Maims Consulting, Finnish equipment manufacturer Picoson has recently achieved remarkable results in the development of first-class photonics technology with its ALD (Atomic Layer Deposition) equipment and solutions.

Optical devices such as optical waveguide amplifiers and lasers are the core components of optical data transmission, as well as one of the key technologies for realizing social modernization, interconnection and information driving.

Silicon photonic integration technology has promoted the further development of optical devices, and optical solutions have overcome some of the key challenges in traditional technologies and opened a new era of microelectronics technology.

Erbium-doped optical waveguide amplifiers and lasers are the most potential candidates for signal generation and communication wavelength amplification. In order to obtain the best performance of these devices, the quantity and spatial distribution of erbium atoms in the host material must be strictly optimized and controlled. Only ALD technology can meet the above requirements.

Professor Sun Zhipei of Aalto University in Finland is also one of Picosun’s customers. He has now adopted Picosun’s ALD technology and has worked with international partners in Micronova (Finnish National Micro and Nano Technology Research Infrastructure, developed by Finnish VTT Technology Research). The center and Aalto University jointly developed a world record high-performance erbium-doped silicon photonic integrated waveguide amplifier.
